CSA Cement Grades Explained: 42.5, 52.5 and Higher Strength Classes

What the Grade Number Means, and Why CSA Reaches It in Days

The number in a cement grade, 42.5 or 52.5, is a strength class expressed in megapascals. For CSA (calcium sulfoaluminate) cement the same numbering applies, but with an important difference: because CSA hardens rapidly, it reaches its grade-level strength in days rather than the 28 that Portland cement needs. This guide explains how to read the grades, shows the actual strength data for our CSA Cement, and points to where the higher 62.5-and-above classes fit.

What the Grade Number Actually Means

Cement strength grades follow a simple convention shared across international and Chinese standards: the number is the standard compressive strength class in megapascals (MPa). A 42.5 cement is one whose standard mortar test meets a 42.5 MPa class; a 52.5 cement meets a 52.5 MPa class. The grade is a strength classification, not a chemical type and not a dosage.

For ordinary Portland cement that classification is defined at 28 days, because Portland gains most of its strength slowly. This is the assumption most buyers carry into a grade discussion, and it is exactly where CSA behaves differently.

The CSA Difference: Same Grade, Much Earlier

CSA cement is built on ye’elimite, which forms ettringite and develops strength within hours. The grade number is the same scale, but the timeline behind it is compressed.

Grade Reached Early

Because CSA hardens rapidly, a 42.5 or 52.5 class strength is effectively achieved within the first few days, not at 28. The grade number understates how quickly the cement becomes usable.

Read the Age, Not Just the Number

When comparing a CSA grade with a Portland grade, look at the 1-day and 3-day values. Two cements can share a 42.5 label yet reach it on completely different schedules.

Grade Is Not the Whole Story

Setting time, early strength, shrinkage behaviour and sulfate balance all matter alongside the grade. The class number tells you the strength ceiling, not the application fit.

Reading the Table: The Grade Arrives at 3 Days

The data makes the CSA character concrete. The 42.5 grade already reaches 42.5 MPa at 3 days and continues to 45.0 MPa at 28 days; the 52.5 grade reaches 52.5 MPa at 3 days and 55.0 MPa at 28 days. In other words, the grade-defining strength is essentially delivered within the first three days, with 1-day compressive strengths of 30.0 and 40.0 MPa already in hand.

That is the practical value of CSA in rapid repair, non-shrink grout, tile adhesive and fast-return-to-service systems: the strength class is not a 28-day promise but an early reality, which is what shortens downtime on site.

Higher Strength Classes: 62.5, 72.5 and Above

Buyers often search for higher grades such as 62.5. Within the sulfoaluminate family these higher strength classes do exist, and they are typically found in the white and high-belite sulfoaluminate range rather than in standard grey CSA cement. These grades are used where very high strength is combined with a white or decorative requirement, for example in GRC, terrazzo, artificial stone and high-performance precast.

If your target is a 62.5-class white cement, the right starting point is our white and high-belite sulfoaluminate products rather than the standard 42.5 or 52.5 grey grades. The grade number still means the same MPa strength class; the difference is the product family that carries it.

Choosing a Grade for Your Application

  • Match the class to the strength target, not the reputation of a high number. A 42.5 CSA grade already delivers high early strength; a higher class is only worth the cost when the application genuinely needs it.
  • Weigh early strength and setting alongside the grade. For repair and fast-track work, the 1-day and 3-day values often matter more than the 28-day class.
  • Consider colour and application. Grey grades suit general mortar, grout and repair; white high-belite grades suit decorative and high-strength precast needs.
  • Confirm the blend. CSA Cement can be used standalone or blended, typically up to about 30% of total cementitious in a blended system, with the exact ratio set by trial.
  • Verify by trial mix. The published grade is a classification; the strength you achieve depends on water content, additives, curing and raw materials.
