CSA Dosage and Mechanism Guide

How Calcium Sulfoaluminate Works, and Typical Starting Dosage for Mortar and Grout

This guide explains the chemistry behind CSA performance and gives typical starting dosage ranges for CSA Binder, CSA Cement and CSA Expansive Agent in dry mix mortar, grout and concrete systems. All values are starting points for formulation testing.

How CSA Works (Mechanism)

CSA performance comes mainly from one reactive phase: calcium sulfoaluminate, also called ye’elimite. When CSA binder or cement is mixed with a calcium sulfate (gypsum) source and water, ye’elimite reacts quickly to form ettringite.

Fast setting and high early strength

Ettringite forms much faster than the calcium silicate hydrates of ordinary Portland cement, so CSA systems develop early strength in hours instead of days. This is why CSA is used for rapid repair mortar, fast return to service and fast-setting tile adhesive.

Shrinkage compensation

Ettringite formation produces controlled early expansion. This expansion offsets later drying shrinkage, which keeps grout in full contact under base plates and reduces cracking and edge curling in mortar and self-leveling compounds. Dosage must be controlled, because too much expansive phase can cause harmful over-expansion.

Low alkali and durability direction

CSA systems are typically lower in alkali than OPC, which helps protect glass fiber in GRC and supports durability-focused and lower-carbon product positioning.

Setting Time Control

In CSA systems, setting time is driven by the reaction between ye’elimite and the calcium sulfate source, not by a single fixed number. The base initial set for CSA binder systems is typically around 12-30 minutes, and it can be adjusted in two directions:

  • To slow down (longer working time): citric acid, tartaric acid or borax retarder, typically around 0.1-0.3%.
  • To speed up: small additions of lithium carbonate as accelerator.
  • Key lever: the gypsum / sulfate balance sets the overall reaction window; temperature, water and raw material variation also shift the result.

Important Note

All dosage values above are starting points for formulation testing only. Final dosage, water control, setting time and expansion must be verified by lab trial. Over-dosage of expansive agent can cause harmful over-expansion in mortar or concrete. Local raw materials, additives and curing conditions will affect the final result.
